Frequently Asked Questions

Enable Macros in Excel

  • For sorting, zooming, and selective printing to work in the Mustang Record Book, macros must be enabled.  To enable macros, click "Tools", "Macro", "Security."  Select either Medium or Low security.  Medium will ask the students to enable them each time they open the book.  Low will automatically enable macros.

Why can't I sort Income & Expense Entries by date?

  • Excel 2000 and older does not support the sort feature in protected files.  The sort button will be grayed-out and not available.  If you want to sort the record book, it will have to be transferred to a computer that has Excel XP (2002) or Excel 2003.

What is/Why do I get a "#Ref" Error?

  • #Ref is a Reference error. It means that a cell was moved or copied and pasted and it messed up the mathematical "order" of the record book. Unfortunately, the only way to fix a reference error is by unlocking the book, which only a record book author can do, fix it, and send it back. Otherwise the student will have to redo the entire book.

Even if students didn't copy and paste (or at least claim they didn't), sometimes they may accidentally drag a cell to a different location.  Excel warns them if this happens, but if they click the wrong button on the error message, they will still overwrite the cell.  Please use this as a reason to reinforce not copying and pasting, etc.

Attach the record book to an email and I will fix it and send it back.
